Website or mobile app: which do you need?

How to choose based on your customers, your budget and what they need to do.

Many businesses ask us for an app when a great website would serve their customers better, and the other way round. The right choice depends on what people need to do and how often they come back.

Start with what your customers do

If people mostly find you, read about your services and get in touch, a fast, mobile-friendly website is enough. Most first visits come from a search or a shared link, and nobody wants to install an app just to look around.

If customers use your service again and again, like booking, ordering, tracking or chatting, an app can make that faster and keep you on their home screen.

When a website is the better choice

  • You need to be found on Google.
  • Most visitors come once or a few times.
  • You want one product that works on every device.
  • You want to launch quickly on a smaller budget.

When an app is worth it

  • Customers use your service every week or every day.
  • You need phone features such as notifications, the camera, location or offline use.
  • Speed and a smooth feel are part of what you sell.
  • You want a direct line to loyal customers through push notifications.

Why many businesses start with the website

A website is easier to update, cheaper to change and brings in new customers through search. Once you know which features people use most, those become the heart of a focused app.

Modern web apps can also be installed on the home screen and work well on phones, which is often a good middle step.

Questions to ask before you decide

  • How often will a typical customer use it?
  • Do you need features only a phone app can offer?
  • Who will keep it updated after launch?
  • How will people discover it in the first place?
